Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a reading management program in which students read books/novels in the system and take computerized tests upon completion. Each book is assigned a point value and is designated by a yellow sticker in our media center. The number of points for each book is based on the number of pages, difficulty of text/vocabulary, number of words per page, etc. If the student correctly answers all of the test questions, he or she earns all of the book’s assigned point value. If questions are answered incorrectly, the student receives a percentage of the point value accordingly. If a student fails to answer a minimum of 65% of the questions correctly, no points are awarded.

Homework

Two hours spent reading at home from books in the Accelerated Reader program is the main homework I assign each week.  (See Current Reading Record). Books that have been made into movies are off limits for testing.  You must use care in selecting books that match your reading ability.  Finding a book that interests you is a big key to enjoying the time you spend reading.  Some students make the unfortunate mistake in selecting one book worth a lot of points.  Only if you are a strong, independent reader should you do this.  It's a good idea to select books that are shorter in length, read as quickly as you can, and test so that you can determine if you made a wise choice.  If you fail the computerized test on a book, you must ask yourself why that happened.

Always check to be sure your book is in the Accelerated Reader program before you begin reading it!  You can do this through the Internet.  Go to www.cvjh.alpinedistrict.org and click on Alexandria.  Fill in the requested information.  If our school has the book, you then scroll down as you look for the Curriculum information.  You will see the words Accelerated Reader if our school has the test for that particular book.  Our school has Accelerated Reader tests available for which we have no books.  In this case you would need to check at school in Accelerated Reader for this information.
