“At the seventh grade level, the Utah Core focuses on reading and writing experiences that are developmentally appropriate: vocabulary instruction that distinguishes literal meanings of words from more complex meanings, comprehension that focuses on text features and structures, retelling and paraphrasing, and distinguishing main idea and details. Writing instruction emphasizes personal or self connections, basic skills in analytical evaluation and assessment of writing, and editing skills that are specific and clearly delineated. The research or inquiry skills identified are fundamental to investigation of a topic or question, with basic oral and written reporting skills.” Utah State Language Arts Core Curriculum, Page 6

Participation is part of your academic grade and is recorded in the Assigned Work category. During our activities and class discussions in class, I expect positive, active participation from you. You should avoid non-productive behavior such as unpreparedness, off-task activity, tardiness, truancy, and late or missing assignments. Gum, candy, foods, drinks, etc., are not allowed in class. (I do allow small breath mints—no larger than TicTacs---or cough drops when necessary). Any offense listed above results in a loss of five points for each occurrence.

- ASSIGNMENT/TEST RESULTS
Results from most book assignments will be immediate as well as any tests corrected in class. A score or grade on major written assignments may take two weeks.
- HOMEWORK
Homework in this class consists mainly of reading Accelerated Reader books at home for a minimum of two hours per week. Reading time should assist in earning reading points. As soon as you finish reading a book, you should take the computerized test on it in my classroom or the media center. (You must have your CV picture identification card with you when you test in the media center). Points are awarded according to the number of correct responses. In order to get the full point value indicated on the book, all of your answers on the test must be correct. For example, if your book is worth ten points and the test has 10 questions and you only miss one, your score will be 90% or nine points of the 10 possible earned. You should always read your books thoroughly because you must correctly answer 70% of the questions to pass the test. 7th grade students are expected to earn a total of 20 points per term. Students may go to the media center before, after, and during lunch to check out books. Your honesty is important. Take tests only on books you read during the current term.

- ATTENDANCE Attending class daily is important. Any assignments or tests missed due to absences may be made up within two weeks. If you are present when an assignment is made but absent when it's due, the assignment is due on the day you return. I support Canyon View’s new tardy policy; make sure you familiarize yourself with it (available in the student planner).

- DISCIPLINE
If you lose points for misbehavior but want to change that, you must correct the problem and demonstrate acceptable behavior for a minimum of ten consecutive days. Up to full credit may be made up in this manner. Repeat offenders will lose this privilege.

- LATE WORK & DEADLINES
Assignments not turned in when called for on the date due are late and lose one-half credit. Reading record deadline is always Friday by the end of your class period unless noted on your sheet.
- EXTRA HELP
If you want or need extra help with an assignment, please ask me right in class! Never be afraid to ask a question when you don't understand. I will usually be available after school until 3:15 on most days except Mondays due to collaboration or when personal emergencies occur. I will not be available for extra help or conferences after school on Fridays. It's best for you to make an appointment with me whenever possible.
- WEBSITE
I have a “work in progress” this year on Canyon View’s website and hope to be able to update it regularly. Students who have been absent or have lost handouts, etc., may find this helpful. A copy of my disclosure is there as well. Go to www.cvjh.alpinedistrict.org and click on Faculty & Staff.
- ENGLISH DISCLOSURE STATEMENT
This statement is yours to keep. Copies of it are available at parent-teacher conferences, and one is on file with the principal at Canyon View Junior High. You and your parent are to read and discuss this information. Please feel free to ask me any questions regarding it.
